A is for Apple - ABC's of Healthy Living Series

Transformyou is excited to bring you our “ABC’s of Healthy Living" Series where each week, we’ll discuss a specific subject based on the letters of the alphabet.  Here’s a chance to see 26 new ideas or great reminders on how to live healthy and enjoy life.

We’ll start at the beginning with the letter A and the most common word associated with it – Apple.  Whether we consider them too cliché or too basic, it’s sometimes easy to forget the importance of apples in our diet.

Based on a 2004 report, Red Delicious and Granny Smith apples ranked in the top 100 foods with the highest level of antioxidant concentration.  These antioxidants fight disease and help repair oxidation damage that takes place in normal cell activity.

Apples are also a great source of fiber, specifically, a fiber called pectin which is known for providing many important health benefits.  A healthy dose of pectin has actually shown to help people lose weight by helping the stomach stay or feel fuller longer.

There are many other reasons why you should consider an apple the next time you reach for a snack.  Here are some to remember:

  • Boosts your immune system
  • Helps your heart stay healthy
  • Reduces cholesterol
  • Promotes whiter and healthier teeth
  • Lowers your risk for diabetes
  • Helps to control your weight
  • Can help to prevent cataracts
  • Reduces your risk of cancer
  • Prevents diarrhea and constipation
  • Detoxify your liver

Adding healthy foods like apples to your daily diet can make a difference in how you feel and how active you are.  Good fruits and vegetables are the perfect, natural source of the vitamins and nutrients we need to stay healthy.

We hope you’ll continue to check back at transformyou often as we focus on bringing you more healthy tips and ideas.
