Use Reminders to Stay Motivated

Remember that moment when you were in a dressing room at a store looking at yourself in the mirror and feeling an overwhelming sense of motivation to do whatever it takes to fit into the clothes you were trying to squeeze into?

That initial motivation to make some kind of change in your life is powerful and memorable…but it also goes away way too fast.

The problem with motivation is that it doesn’t seem to stick around for very long and allows us to get easily distracted. What we need is a way to remind ourselves about our goals so we continue to stay motivated.  Here are a few ideas on how to do just that:

Ask Yourself Why

Once you’ve decided that you’re ready to make a change in life, like losing weight for example, sit down and ask yourself why. Why is this such an important change? Why now?  Be sure to write the answers to these questions down. For some reason, it helps us to understand the logic behind our decisions and reinforces our determination to reach our goals.

Use a Calendar

Whether it’s the free puppy calendar you got at the doctors office or the calendar on your smart phone, use a calendar to set goals and keep track of your progress. Calendars are great reminders and hold us accountable to our goals. Be sure to use a calendar that you carry with you all of the time so you will see it often.

Take Pictures

Going back to the moment in front of the mirror –nothing else says more about us than a picture or visual affirmation. Use pictures of yourself or of other important people or things in your life to motivate you to stay on track. Being able to quickly reference pictures to not only see where you’ve been but also how you’re progressing can definitely make a difference.

Get Motivated by Others

The people you surround yourself with in life can have a big impact in your ability to set goals and then meet those goals. Surround yourself with motivating people who are aware of what it is you want to change in your life. Lean on them for support and ask them to hold you accountable in a nice way.
